SEO vs SEM: the difference and when to use each

What SEO and SEM are, how they differ in cost, speed and durability, and how to decide where to invest first based on goals, budget and timeline.

Black balance scale in equilibrium: a seedling grows on one plate and a stack of lime discs sits on the other.

SEO and SEM aim for the same thing: a brand that shows up when someone searches for what it offers. The difference lies in how that place is earned and how long it lasts. Understanding it avoids two common mistakes: expecting immediate sales from SEO and depending on ads forever.

What is SEO?

SEO (search engine optimization) is the work done so a site appears in organic results, the ones that are not paid per click. It rests on three fronts:

  • Technical. A site that loads fast, works well on a phone and can be read by search engines without obstacles.
  • Content. Pages that clearly answer what people are looking for.
  • Authority. Links and mentions from other sites that confirm the brand is a reliable source.

SEO is built step by step and its results add up.

Organic rankings are not bought. They are built. The first results usually appear after a few months and grow over time.

What is SEM?

SEM (search engine marketing) is paid advertising on search engines. The most widely used platform is Google Ads. The advertiser chooses the searches to appear in, sets how much to pay for each click and writes the ads. Results arrive the day the campaign goes live and stop when the budget runs out.

What are the differences between SEO and SEM?

SEO SEM
Cost Investment in technical work and content Payment for each click, plus management
Time to results Months Days
Durability Lasts while the site is maintained Ends with the budget
Control Indirect: the search engine decides the order Direct: searches, areas, schedules and messages
Measurement Rankings, organic clicks and conversions Cost per click, cost per conversion and return

When is SEO the better choice?

  • The business wants a source of visits that does not depend on paying every month.
  • People research before deciding and compare options.
  • There are frequent questions the site can answer better than competitors.
  • The working horizon is six months or longer.

When is SEM the better choice?

  • There is a launch, a promotion or a season with a date.
  • The site is new and has no organic rankings yet.
  • A message or an offer needs to be tested quickly.
  • The most valuable searches are dominated by competitors with years of advantage.

Why do they work better together?

SEO and SEM share the same searches and the same landing pages. Running them separately wastes information.

Two interlocking gears, one black and one lime, standing on a pale surface.
SEO and SEM share searches and landing pages.
  1. Ads show which searches sell. A few weeks of campaigns reveal which terms generate inquiries. Those terms become the content priority.
  2. A good landing page serves both. Clarity and speed raise ad quality, lower the cost per click and help organic rankings.
  3. SEO reduces the dependence on paid media. As the site gains rankings, the ad budget focuses on the searches where it does not appear yet.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring SEO on a campaign timeline. Judging it after thirty days leads to abandoning work that was starting to pay off.
  • Sending ads to the home page. Each ad needs a page that answers that specific search.
  • Turning ads off with no alternative. If every inquiry comes from paid media, stopping it stops sales.
  • Counting visits instead of inquiries. What matters is how many people write, call or buy.

How to decide where to start?

Three questions put the decision in order:

  1. When are results needed? If the answer is this month, the starting point is SEM.
  2. Is the site ready to receive visits? If it loads slowly or does not explain the offer well, neither strategy performs. The site comes first.
  3. What budget can be sustained for six months? A smaller, steady investment performs better than a large effort that gets cut.

In most cases the answer is a combination: ads to generate inquiries from day one and SEO so those inquiries cost less over time.

At TersLab, advertising and organic growth are planned together and measured on the same dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, SEO or SEM?

Neither is better in every case. SEM is the right choice when inquiries are needed this month. SEO is the right choice when the goal is a source of visits that does not depend on paying for each click. Most businesses get better results with both.

How long does SEO take to show results?

The first movements usually appear between three and six months in, depending on how competitive each search is and on the state of the site. A new site takes longer than one with history.

Does Google Ads improve organic rankings?

Not directly. Paying for ads does not raise organic rankings. It helps indirectly: it shows which searches generate inquiries and it forces landing pages to improve, and both things serve SEO.

How much budget is needed to start with SEM?

It depends on the cost per click in each industry and city. A reasonable start is an amount that can be sustained for at least three months, measuring the cost per inquiry and adjusting from that figure.
